Solar energy in Ukraine: prospects and challenges
Solar energy is one of the most promising alternative sources of electricity in Ukraine. Our country has significant solar energy resources and favorable conditions for the development of solar energy.
According to the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine, as of the end of 2022, solar power plants (SPPs) with a total capacity of 6320 MW (excluding the temporarily occupied territories) were installed in Ukraine. This is about 6% of the total installed capacity of power generating facilities in Ukraine.
The main incentives for the development of solar energy in Ukraine are:
- Increasing electricity tariffs for households and businesses. This encourages consumers to switch to alternative sources of electricity, in particular, solar.
- Introduction of a "green" tariff. This tariff guarantees households and businesses that install solar power plants a premium to the price of electricity they sell to the state.
- Development of solar panel production technologies. Solar panel production technologies are constantly improving, leading to lower costs and higher efficiency.
However, there are a number of challenges that hinder the development of solar energy in Ukraine:
- Lack of experience and qualified personnel in the field of solar energy.
- Imperfect legislation in the field of alternative energy.
- Lack of government incentives for the development of solar energy.
Despite these challenges, solar energy has significant potential for development in Ukraine. By 2030, Ukraine could have up to 10 GW of solar power plants, which would cover about 10% of its total electricity demand.
To realize this potential, it is necessary to:
- Invest in the development of the solar energy industry.
- Increase the production of solar panels in Ukraine.
- Create favorable conditions for the development of solar energy at the legislative level.
At the same time, the development of solar energy in Ukraine should lead to a number of positive consequences:
- Reducing dependence on imported energy.
- Improving Ukraine's energy security.
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Creation of new jobs.
